The Story of the Qashqai Tribe & Their Carpets
For centuries, the Qashqai Tribe has wandered across the rugged mountains and fertile plains of southwestern Persia (modern-day Iran), following ancient migration routes with their flocks. As one of the world’s most celebrated nomadic peoples, the Qashqai have preserved a rich cultural heritage through music, storytelling, craftsmanship, and the art of carpet weaving.
The Qashqai Tribe: Nomads of the Zagros
Originating from Turkic tribes that migrated southward into the Fars province between the 11th and 14th centuries, the Qashqai formed a powerful tribal confederation made up of several distinct sub-tribes, including the Kashkooli, Amaleh, Farsimadan, Darreshuri, and Shishbayli.
For generations, Qashqai life revolved around the biannual migration (koch):
Summer Pastures (Yaylaq): High in the cool Zagros Mountains near Shiraz.
Winter Pastures (Qishlaq): Lowlands near the Persian Gulf.
Because they were constantly on the move, every tool had to be mobile. Weaving was performed exclusively by women using portable horizontal ground looms. When it was time to move the camp, the loom was unstrung, rolled up, packed onto horses or camels, and reassembled at the next site.
Every Qashqai rug is more than a floor covering—it’s a reflection of nomadic life. Traditionally woven by the women of the tribe, these carpets are created on portable looms while families travel between their summer and winter pastures. The designs are rarely drawn beforehand; instead, they are woven from memory, inspired by nature, tribal traditions, and everyday experiences.
Qashqai carpets are instantly recognizable for their bold geometric patterns, vivid natural colors, and symbolic motifs. Stylized animals, birds, flowers, trees, and protective tribal emblems are woven into each piece, with every symbol carrying meaning—representing prosperity, freedom, family, protection, or the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
The wool used in authentic Qashqai rugs comes from the tribe’s own sheep, prized for its softness, strength, and natural sheen. Traditionally dyed using plants, roots, insects, and minerals, the rich reds, deep blues, warm golds, and earthy browns mature beautifully over time, giving each rug even greater character with age.
Because every rug is woven entirely by hand, no two Qashqai carpets are ever identical. Small variations in pattern and color are not imperfections but treasured signs of authenticity, telling the story of the individual weaver and the journey behind each creation.
